How To Approach Work as a Christian
A few weeks ago Pastor Louis preached on Wisdom for our Work. We often lose sight of the meaning and purpose of our work, especially when it right after our summer vacation! The Bible tells us that even the most menial tasks are important and can be used to bring Glory to God. Check out this post by Kristen Wood for some encouragement in your work today.
Wisdom From the Word
The choice of July 4th as our Independence Day is an interesting one if you think about it. This isn’t the date of the British surrender at the Battle of Yorktown or the end of the Revolutionary War. No, July 4th, 1776, was the date of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Continental Congress wrote and signed a document to declare independence a little over a year into a war that would last 7 more bloody years. So, as a country we don’t celebrate our birth as a nation from when we won our independence, but when we wrote about it. And our country is defined even more by another document, the US Constitution. We still, mostly, operate the government of our country based on that document. And despite that fact that the rights and intentions of both of these documents were not initially extended to all people in our country, it was these documents that were then later used to extend those freedoms. We didn’t have to do away with those documents to give more people freedom, we just had to finally apply them rightly and fully.
So, it’s interesting that we celebrate a document-based country today, as we in the church are called to be a document-based people. Our founding document obviously being the Bible. We’ve been walking through Proverbs this summer examining what God teaches us about how to live wisely. So I figured it would be the perfect day to look about what Proverbs says about the Wisdom to be found in all of God’s Word, the church’s founding document.
Here’s the Big Idea for today: Not all wisdom is created equal; true wisdom comes from God’s Word.
Fathers Are Doers
Fathers. When I think of fathers, I think of doers. They do... things. Even if sometimes the things they are doing is resting until they have to do something else! Whether it’s doing things around the house, doing things at work, doing things with the family, we always have something to do. Being a father is a wonderful thing. When I had my first child, I was excited and very proud! I had this small, innocent, helpless spark of possibility and potential placed into my care. I know a lot of fathers experience fear but I did not. I have an amazing wife and family that, I knew, had my back and would be there to help me. I grew up in a good family with a great dad. I had other men mentor me and show me what it means to care for my children. And, of course, I also had my faith in a Heavenly Father. What an example He has been in my life! Talk about a doer! Provider, Protector, and Teacher. These are just a few attributes of God that stick out to me when I think of God as my Father. It amazes me how these attributes overflow into my role as a father.
Is Sex An Issue In Your Marriage?
I was preparing to write a follow-up post to Pastor Louis’ message on sex this past Sunday when I received this email from Paul Tripp. I can’t really say anything better than Paul Tripp so I decided to share his words with you.
Garage Sale Junkie
Garage sale junkie. That’s certainly part of who I am and something I enjoy! I actually had a garage sale this past December after purging items from our home while on COVID confinement.
A very sweet couple stopped by and while the gentleman played with my grandson’s toys, I carried on a conversation with his wife. It didn’t take long for us to get on to the subject of Jesus or for her to hand me a postcard inviting me to City Awakening. We must have talked for 15 minutes before I called my husband outside to meet Mary Kay and Jeff. We then continued our conversation.
